Today on the blog, Jess gets a little handsy…and I like it…

Of all the things I collect and display on my shelves, my group of hand-shaped sculptures are my favourite. Elegant digits carved into timber or shaped in clay, I love the presence of them in my home. Our hands are our greatest tool and they symbolise making and creation. Something handmade has more soul than something produced by a machine and the outreaching of hands in human contact can convey a myriad of emotions- just think of the hand emojis you use on a daily basis!

One of the hand shaped pieces I would love to add to my collection is a hand chair, a design attributed to surrealist artist Pedro Friedeberg. In 1962, Friedeberg set a local carpenter to task, asking him to carve a hand that was big enough to sit on. Even though the artist has since said that he hates them and their iconic status, designers and collectors worldwide continue to covet the piece and its perfect marriage of form and function. The fact that Friedeberg’s timber design has been released in gold leaf, silver and coloured plastic, allows the piece to bring an edge (and a little bit of humour) to a range of interior styles, from Hollywood glam to colour pop retro. Many reproductions exist today but it would be the original timber version that I would very happily welcome to my collection of hand-shaped things in my home.

Little Nicki can get a bit handsy too – above is a detail from her home.
